By Tracy Dundas, Owner of AboutFaces Modeling AgencyDo I have to be 5’10” – 6’1” and really thin to be a model?
No! Because the opportunities in modeling have expanded tremendously
in recent years there are opportunities for all types; From Fashion to
real people type. Do I have to be a certain clothing size?
Your physical appearance is very important in modeling, as it is actually
one of the reasons a client may hire you. It is important your body is
properly proportioned for your height & body frame. Is training necessary?
In order to do anything well, you will want to get as much training and
exposure as possible. The more you know and understand about the business
the better you can succeed. Classes in modeling will help develop your
runway techniques, acting skills and can assist in building your portfolio
& self-confidence. Are there any other classes I can take to help me prepare for a modeling
career?
Are pictures necessary?
Yes! The model’s portfolio (your picture) is one of the most important
sales tools. It shows the model in a variety of situations. It gives prospective
clients and photographers an idea of how photogenic you are and how well
you move in front of the camera. What type of work is available?
High Fashion modeling for both females & males, this include runway
& editorial, catalog work, spokesperson, commercial work, real people
type, petite modeling (Females only), Fit modeling showroom modeling,
informal, demonstrating, host/hostess, feature, music videos, the list
is almost endless. Do I have to relocate to pursue modeling or are their opportunities
available locally?
No! Many models have a very successful career without relocating. However,
if your goal is to become a supermodel and be recognized worldwide, then
you must be open to traveling and possibly relocating to a metropolitan
city such as New York, Los Angeles, Dallas or Miami, or traveling abroad. What is the demand for male models?
VERY HIGH! Male models should be no shorter than 5’ 11. (if you are shorter,
and want to be in the business consider acting). Men are generally interested
in Fashion, grooming, and fitness. Therefore, there is a need to market
them. How much money can I make modeling?
The salary varies from assignment to assignment. Very few people start
off making the BIG BUCKS. As you gain more experience and build your portfolio,
the money you earn will increase. Salary will also vary from local, to
national and international work. Does your career end at the age of 30?
NO! It’s true that your focus on the type of modeling assignments you
can be booked for will change as you change or get older. However, there
is definitely a need for all ages. In fact, sometimes even more so than
the younger model. What is the percentage of success?
With everything the more you apply yourself, the better you succeed.
However, this business differs greatly from others because it is based
on what look, styles and images are currently in demand. How do I get an agent?
The first step in getting started is to consult with a reputable agency
in your city. You can refer to the Better Business Bureau, on a recommendation
from a friend or associate that models. By meeting with an agent/scout,
that person will give you an honest assessment of your potential and help
you understand the necessary stages in order to begin your modeling career.
Remember there are no guarantees in modeling (or any career), as much
as you put into it, is what you’ll get out of it! ABOUTFACES
